The trouble with western road trips is that you eventually have to cross Nevada, inevitably in a single day.
We took the Extraterrestrial Highway (NV 375), which was filled with more cows than aliens as far as I could tell. But it passes Groom Lake, which was the site of significant cold-war aeronautics testing, and the “town” of Rachel, the home of the Little Ale-Inn. It was also suitable for testing the Fit’s top speed, which was limited by the buffeting winds.
We spent New Years Eve at the historic Benton Hot Springs, which were piping hot in the frigid air. I came out looking a little like a lobster, and felt not-dissimmilar. Went to bed at the late hour of 9pm, but woke for a morning dip before heading out.
