We’ve seen Tikal, Petra, Machu Picchu and a few of the other wonders. Time to check out the biggest temple complex in the world.<\/p>\n

The most surprising thing about Angkor Wat is the scale, both large and small. The site is huge, literally a city, and that’s still being mapped by archaeologists with lasers<\/a>. But the carvings are small and intricate and everywhere, covering almost every surface; incredible.<\/p>\n

We got there for the customary sunrise, but I actually enjoyed the walk through the main temple in the dark more. We were dropped off without really knowing where we were, and seeing the stones arise in the jungle was breathtaking, as it was designed to be.<\/p>\n

As the sun rose it got hotter, and we retreated to the tree-covered temples at Ta Promh and Bayon, both inside the even bigger Angkor Tom complex.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, we were ready for a beer.<\/p>\n
