After a week in Israel, we crossed the border in Aqaba and got a taxi up to Petra. I’ve been here twice before, and this time I was determined to see something new.<\/p>\n

We did the classic Siq walk the first day, but the second we got a guide to take us an alternate route through Wadi al-Mudhlim. It’s an original part of the Petra waterworks, and required a bit of scrambling in a narrow canyon. Our guide was fantastic, and getting away from the crowd made the experience even more magical. We ended at the street of facades, from where I did a quick hike up to the viewpoint above the Treasury. About an eight mile day in all, and the waist-deep muddy canyon water ruined my shoes.<\/p>\n

After Petra, we headed to Wadi Rum for even more desert isolation. It makes the trading hub even more impressive seeing where the caravans would have to travel. We stayed at Wadi Rum Bedouin Camp<\/a>, which was expertly managed by Mohammad Hammad and his family of guides.<\/p>\n
