What better way to end the trip than relaxing on the beach and enjoying the reef?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

We enjoyed a week in the cayes, biking around San Pedro and north to the “secret beach”, sailing<\/a> to Caye Caulker, snorkeling in the Hol Chan marine reserve with eagle rays and nurse sharks, and fishing for our lobster lunch on a “survivor tour<\/a>.” I also learned a good lesson about the signs of heatstroke, and the importance of drinking water in between rum punches and hits on the spliff…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cocotal Inn<\/a> was lovely, far enough from the bustle of town that it felt private, but still walking distance to several<\/a> great<\/a> restaurants. There are lots of big resorts, and the whole place feels a bit like “vacationland.” But the water is clear, the reef still in good shape, and the food delicious. What’s not to love? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caye Caulker has developed a lot since I was last there 13 years ago<\/a> (wow). But the “go slow” vibe remains, even if the sign is a bit cracked at the dock. The Lazy Lizard is a bit more of a scene than before, but the panty rippers are still good. We’ll have to come back in the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
