Today we are doing a kayak tour of the glacier across the bay from our farm camp. Ruth and I visited in 2013, and this time we have a real guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Woke up at 6am with the sky already bright. Ate a quick breakfast and packed lunch and snacks for an active day. Drove down to the dock near Salty Dawg for an 8am departure, and stopped for a coffee at the Salmon Sisters. There’s dense fog on the water, but Captain Spencer did a great job getting us across the bay and describing the views we could have seen. Met guide our Zachary, one of six brothers in the Three Moose<\/a> family, and headed up the trail.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It’s a three mile hike up the Saddle to the old glacier face, and Zachary had a lot of spots to stop, let us rest, and explain the surroundings. He showed us some native plants, his family cabins, and the mountain views as the fog lifted. Once we got to the beach, we got the kayaks from their shed and paddled out towards the ice. It was maybe another two miles, and easy going without much wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was impressive to be so close to the bergs, but not quite as big as in Antarctica. Maybe nothing will ever compare, but this feels close. We had lunch on a secluded beach, got to taste some ice and take more pictures of their vibrant blue color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hiked back down to dock to our waiting boat across the bay. We said goodbye to Zach, as he\u2019s going to a baseball game and we are going to the bar. Had a drink at the Salty Dog, and did a little shopping on the split. I stopped by the fish processing tents, and a friendly guy gave me fresh roe right out of the belly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had tacos and ceviche for dinner at Swell Tacos<\/a>, but were too full for gelato. Hopefully tomorrow after our bear hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On our way back to the farm, we checked in and weighed in for our flight. In the bright evening light we wrote journal entries overlooking the glacier as otters played in the bay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
