Erebus and Terror Gulf

Today we got off the ship again and into the water for a kayak among icebergs and the “polar plunge.” What a trip!

Brown Bluff and Paulette Island

We saw our first big penguin colonies, and tried our best at being National Geographic wildlife photographers.

South Shetland Islands

We finished the Drake Passage with our stomachs intact and got our first sights of the White Continent! The winds are down, and the stoke is high.

Drake Passage

There is no land at this latitude, so the wind blows uninterrupted around the world. Huge waves and storms can ensue, or it can be entirely calm. Crossing can either be “the drake shake” or a “drake lake.” We got a bit of both.

Today we went to the southernmost city in the world, and the northernmost point in our expedition. We are so excited to finally start our trip to Antarctica!
