I’ve been to a lot of ancient Islamic cities in my travels, but Fes is definitely the most architecturally distinct. The largest auto-free urban area in the world, and home to the oldest university, thousand year old tanneries, and innumerable tiny streets, the architecture and urban design are so different from the Western conception of what a city is. I’ll let Ruth say more from an academic point of view, but I loved wandering the streets, getting lost immediately, and finding our way back to our dar, often with the help of some friendly (and expectant) youths.

Every day was an adventure, and photos can probably do a better job at giving a sense of the place than words can.
