We took the train to Rabat, the capital city and Hannah’s new home by the Mediterranean. It was a lovely walk down rue Mohammad V (or mo-five, in the expatriate lingo) to the rather rectilinear medina. We are staying in a lovely riad in the casbah, which is painted a shimmering blue and white.

It’s a little chilly here, so I’m glad Ruth brought my down jacket, which Hedi is currently enjoying. During the day it’s fine, but with very little humidity it gets chilly quickly. We had a touristy lunch yesterday on a faux pirate ship; the neighboring town of Sale was apparently quite a port for marauders. I enjoyed a beer in the sunshine and toasted to privateers past.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

For New Years, we ventured to a lovely beach-side bar called Plage. We got free fancy masques, and toasted oysters and champagne into the night. It’s also our engagement anniversary, so Ruth and I have twice as much to celebrate. Hard to believe we were only in Kyoto a year ago, so much has happened in our lives since then.

On our way out of town, we stopped by the national currency museum, which had a fabulous display (entirely in French) of ancient and modern numismatics and art. Part of the permanent exhibit shows the progression of Moroccan from orientalism by the European masters, to the modern independent national identity.
