The great thing about a yacht holiday is you just have to unpack once, and then the boat is your home for a week. Our first port stop is just across the channel on the island of Hvar.

Because we are early in the season, we got a spot right on the quay. Toni says that in a month the whole bay will be full; but today it is calm, the nights are quiet, and the bars are full of locals. He knows everyone, and scoots around to run errands quickly on two wheels.

For my birthday dinner, he was able to get a spot to open just for us. They made a traditional peka, octopus baked with potatoes and white wine, buried under a wood coals for a long time. Thank you Velo Misto for cooking us an amazing traditional meal!

The wind was still high on the 1st, so we did an inland walk and wine tasting instead of heading out on the water. A taxi took us to Vrboska, where we walked a few kilometers along the coast to Jelsa. There the Duboković Winery had excellent varietals to taste in their cave. I particularly liked their Laganini and Medvejedica labels.

Ruth also surprised me with a captain’s hat and Kelsey found a festive “birthday boy” button, so I was easy to identify as the man of the hour.
