While everyone heads to Milford, we went a bit further off the path to an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound. It was totally worth it.

Up and over the Haast Pass, we encountered a dozen waterfalls and some spectacular scenery around Wanaka.
Flew on a helicopter to a glacier, no big deal. Guides are mandatory.
Woke up very early to catch the interisland ferry. Got great views and only a bit seasick.
We didn’t want to throw the ring into the volcano, but somebody had to do it.
