We didn’t want to throw the ring into the volcano, but somebody had to do it.
Ok, we didn’t really. But Tongariro National Park (the fourth oldest in the world!) was also used for shots of Mt Doom in LoTR. It was raining a bit when we were there, but we had time for a short hikes to a viewpoint on a ridge and a rushing waterfall.
After a long drive to Wellington, we made it just in time to see a double rainbow on the docks, and to impress some fellow tourists with my posing abilities. Dinner was at a very hip restaurant called Shepherd, and got drinks afterwards at a library bar which would have been at home in the Mission.
